The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Management Transition Follows Lukewarm Feedback
The new appointee steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing unveiling last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had indicated the need for a clearer vision.
Ismailer stated that the developers is now overhauling the project with a refreshed focus, aiming to satisfy community desires.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
This announcement mirrors a similar action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the complete text from the president's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re excited for that partnership to continue.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last autumn’s the game testing phase was enlightening. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the necessity for a clearer brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the criticism to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s ready to fulfill its promise to our audience.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To boost the outstanding progress you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome the new hire as the latest Studio Head of the team. Following a period of discussions, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s leadership and experience in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and leading some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in welcoming Ben next week. We are all eager to continue seeing the progress of Project ETHOS in the weeks to come.
David
