India's capital Rises to Toxic Pollution After Diwali
Tuesday brought residents of the world's most polluted city found themselves exposed to severely hazardous air that fell into the "alarming" category.
Alarming Pollution Measurements
Several parts of the capital recorded an AQI above 500, which equals ten times the recommended level established by the WHO.
Particular areas, concentrations of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, equating to 15-20x higher than safe standards.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Current Changes
Beginning in 2020, officials had enforced a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the deadly haze that covers the city as the cold season approaches.
Yet in recent months, the recently formed city administration appealed to the supreme court to request a easing of the ban.
They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically criticized by environmentalists as being only about 30% lower impact – as a balance between "tradition and environment".
Court Decision and Enforcement
Despite concerns of medical and ecological campaigners, the court approved the appeal, mandating that green firecrackers could be set off during specific time windows throughout the festival.
During the celebrations, there was considerable disregard of the time restrictions across the city, with minimal regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly type.
Several monitoring devices throughout Delhi showed air quality spiking around the night hours to some of the worst levels recorded during celebrations in at least recent memory.
Regional Consequences
Extensive ignition of fireworks during the festival also initiated a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab province partially attributing declining air quality in the city of Lahore on pollutants traveling from across the border following the festivities.
Long-Standing Environmental Crisis
Alarmingly severe readings of pollution in the city have persisted as a significant problem for more than 15 years, with the problem showing no improvement.
Near the festival period, the levels of dangerous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been observed to spike to significantly exceeding the peak levels ever documented in China's capital, which was once considered as the globally most contaminated metropolis.
Various Contamination Sources
This crisis in the city is attributed to a convergence of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, building projects, garbage fires and smoke from farm burning in adjacent states of farming communities.
Within these states, farmers regularly burn crop residue to clear them quickly, creating hazardous haze that remains stagnant over the capital as winter air arrives.
Public Health and Financial Impact
The economic and health impact on the roughly thirty-three million people calling home the capital region is substantial, according to numerous investigations.
The contaminated air results in increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can potentially cause malignancies.
The pollution is projected to be causing 10,000 early fatalities each year in the city.
